Indeed, these wild fruits native to Asia and North America are part of the <em>Grossulariaceae<\/em> family and belong to the genus Ribes. There are some 14 species of gooseberries, also called &#8220;red currant&#8221;, in Canada. They grow on a small shrub without thorns or stings and are red or white in color.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that gooseberry is rarely eaten plain? Indeed, in cooking it is mainly used to make sauces, jams and liqueurs, while its leaves, buds and marc have medicinal, naturopathic and cosmetic uses.<\/p>\n<p><u style=\"font-size: 1.618em;\">Purchase<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Choose your gooseberries translucent and very shiny, in whole clusters without detached fruits.<\/p>\n<h3><u>Preserve<\/u><\/h3>\n<p>Keep your gooseberries in the refrigerator for a few days. Once seeded, they can be stored for several months in the freezer.<\/p>\n<h3><u>Preparation<\/u><\/h3>\n<p>Wash your gooseberries before serving. Cook them in desserts or in jelly, for example, to make a grand veneur sauce to accompany your red meats.<\/p>\n<h3><u>Stay healthy<\/u><\/h3>\n<p>The gooseberry is very rich in antioxidants. Its vitamin C content is comparable to that of citrus fruits.
