About us

La place des producteurs

Almost 100 years of history

To promote our Quebec produce growers
and connect them with customer.

The Place des Producteurs (PDP) is the implementation of the ideal framework for representing and marketing the produce of our Quebec farmers. First established in what is now known as Place Jacques-Cartier in Old Montreal, and then located on the site of the Marché Central, the PDP’s current premises consist of a refrigerated warehouse whose state-of-the-art technology meets the standards of the agri-food industry. More than just a place to store and market products, the PDP is a hub where growers and customers can meet, interact and learn.

Our Positioning in the Industry

The Place des Producteurs is the only place in Quebec where fresh or processed fruits and vegetables sourced exclusively in Quebec can be bought, marketed or represented.

1925

Launch of the wholesalers’ market at Place Jacques-Cartier and the Marché Bonsecours in Montreal. Produce is brought in mainly by agricultural producers from Saint-Léonard, Rivière-des-Prairies, Sainte-Rose and Sainte-Dorothée.

The Central Market opens its doors

1945

Adrien Moquin, a farmer from La Prairie county, founds the Association des jardiniers maraîchers de la région de Montréal (AJMRM), and serves as its president.

Birth of the AJMRM

1953

Montreal Mayor Camillien Houde cedes to Montreal’s Marché Central a large parcel of land located at the intersection of McEachran (now l’Acadie) and Crémazie Boulevards.

1960

The Place des Producteurs moves from the Marché Bonsecours to the Marché Central. It opens for business and the AJMRM sets up its first offices there.

1996

The Marché Central gets a facelift, with the construction of the Place des Producteurs, and the redevelopment of the agri-food grounds through the addition of new buildings and new access roads.

2020

The PDP moves to the Marché Pie-IX, into a completely renovated, fully refrigerated building equipped with warehousing spaces and meeting today’s agri-food industry standards.
